Polymorphia

The color scheme of the vertical stripes was collected from Edouard Vuillard’s “The Album” and Wassily Kandinsky’s “Composition VII.” For me, both paintings visualize musical tones and rhythms. Kandinsky was a pioneer who composed music with color, shape, and line, and I wanted to develop this idea of sound painting. I first made this as a 2D work for my color design class. Later, on my own, I transformed this physical collage into interactive media with HTML and Javascript. I developed the idea of representing sound with colors by adding notes to each stripe and audio from Krzysztof Penderecki’s concerto “Polymorphia.” This music was featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” one of my favorite films. I was surprised to see that my collage also had the same sepia scheme as that movie. As a “maximalist,” I didn’t want to present only stripes, so I added particles flying around the page.
