This observational drawing series was made while I was listening to Puccini’s tragic opera “Tosca,” especially the recording of the 1984 performance set in the Arena di Verona amphitheatre in Rome, starring Éva Marton, Ingvar Wixell, and Giacomo Aragall. Each line and stroke expresses and performs pain, love, anger, ego, arrogance, betrayal, joy, hope, grace, and death, just like the opera. I love the idea of drawing things that are quite normal, such as cucumber plants, and turning them into something grand or theatrical. This was an observational drawing assignment, and I believe that “more is always more,” so I attempted to capture every tiny detail, as many as I could, and I loved filling in the empty space with what I saw to support my “maximalist” style. I also wanted to express different feelings that I had from each aria of the opera through my hands. I want this drawing to have its own performance. The viewers can listen to the music and judge the picture on their own.
